What Is Whey Protein Used For

Whey protein is the most biologically available protein for the human body. Whey is the derived from milk protein which is made up of Whey and Casein Proteins. In cow's milk Casein is the more predominant protein, however, in human milk whey is the more prominent proportion. This is why whey is more biologically available to humans.

There can be many forms or whey protein such as whey concentrates, isolates, and hydrolyzed whey. There is a common myth that whey concentrates or isolate/concentrate blends digest slower while isolates digest faster. However, all whey digests quickly within an hour. The myth probably comes from the fact that Concentrate whey has higher fat and carbohydrate content. However, there is usually only about 1-2 grams of fat and 1-5 grams of carbohydrates in difference and this will not affect the digestion that much. Moreover, whey concentrates have higher lactose content and this can cause indigestion or upset stomach leading to the thought whey concentrate digests slower. The real differences between whey isolates and whey concentrates are that isolates are 90%+ protein by weight where as Whey concentrates are 80% or less.

The difference in percentage of protein means that the remaining weight will be filled with extra fat, carbohydrates, sugar, cholesterol, and lactose. Whereas Isolates typically have next to fat, carbs, sugar, lactose or cholesterol. Isolates also have higher protein per serving and more serving per container. On the other hand Whey concentrates are a much more affordable way to get your protein as long as you are lactose tolerant. Moreover, whey concentrate isolate blends can be very high quality protein while maintaining a better price point. Hydrolyzed protein is a protein that has been pre-digested down to 2-3 amino acid bonds meaning that the digestion rate is drastically sped up resulting in an ideal protein for post workout recovery or pre workout so you're not digesting while training. Also you can really look at it like a tub of amino acids thus having high anabolic properties but typically more expensive.

A simple calculation you can use to determine quality or protein percentage is by taking the amount of protein and dividing it by the serving size IE: 90% for an Isolate or 60% for a lower quality concentrate.
